It’s grim up north

Klockan är nu midnatt lokal hemmatid och jag fräser fram i cirka 894 km/h 10084 meter över den ryska tundran. Dessvärre har inte internet slagit igenom häromkring, så detta får postas när jag är på plats om cirka fem timmar.

Resan kan indelas i två etapper, tågresan från Göteborg till Kastrup som
skedde genom SJs försorg och flygresan med SAS från Kastrup till Peking.
Inte helt otippat var tåget försenat med ungefär en timme vilket gjorde
att mina marginaler på Kastrup krympte till ett minimum, men tack vare
att det var öde i både incheckning, säkerhetskontroll och passkontroll
lyckades jag ta mig fram i tid. Hela tågresan blev ett stressmoment utan
motstycke då man visste redan från att man klev på att förseningen var
40 minuter och knappast skulle bli bättre. Alla tågvärdar hoppade av
tåget i Lund och vi kom inte därifrån förrän en ledig tågvärd som råkade
vara ombord hoppade in och hjälpte den skitförbannade lokföraren att
göra klart för avgång. Hon skötte sedan kommunikationen med alla
upprörda och stressade passagerare. Jag hann som sagt utan större
problem, men en stackare som skulle till sin farmors begravning gick det
tydligen sämre för. Men han kan säkert glädja sig åt att få en ny
tågbiljett i ersättning om han vill ta tåget till Kastrup för att flyga
och se sin farmors grav vid något senare tillfälle.

Jag har precis avnjutit en tämligen smaklös men ändock mättande måltid och ett par öl därtill. Har varit en behaglig och bekväm flight rakt igenom än så länge. SAS Economy Extra känns som verklig medelklass. Från andra sidan skynket föröver, Business Class, hörs ett lågmält sorl och klirr från champangeglas och allehanda extravaganser. Längre bak i Economy, bortom dasset, råder tumult då pöbeln försöker hålla getterna borta från förlossningen på rad 38. Men här i mitten i Economy Extra är allting otroligt lagom.

Nu ska jag passa på att kika lite på ett par Six Feet Under innan det är dags
att luta sig tillbaka och försöka få några timmars sömn innan frukost
och landning.

Nu är allting packat och klart och fixat och donat. Om en timme bär det av mot Kastrup och därefter Peking. Om allt fungerar som det ska så har jag landat där klockan 11:50 lokal tid (vilket blir 03:50 Svensk tid) för att bli uppmött av Magnus. I sista sekund blev det ordnat så att jag får bo på samma hotell (som egentligen var fullbokat, åtminstone när det gällde standardrum).

Väskan är inte ens halvfull, vilket ger utrymme för många shoppingfynd. Har i princip inte tagit med mig kläder för mer än två dagar så shoppingen kommer det att bli mycket av redan på lördag och söndag innan allvaret sätter igång.

För att blidka mina Kinesiska kollegor har jag lastat med 2 Kg prima svenskt lösgodis, vilket enligt uppgift ska vara en stor favorit. Jag ser en stor möjlighet för den flitige entrepenören att slå mynt av detta faktum.

Nu har höstens TV-säsong dragit igång och ett gäng gamla favoriter är tillbaka i laptopen via närmaste torrentsite. Heroes smackar igång med höjdaravsnitt direkt från start medan Prison Break, som varit en stor personlig favorit, startar väldigt blekt. Jag är väldigt rädd att denna säsong kommer att göra mig besviken.

I Springfield är den evigt gula och aldrig åldrande familjen Simpson tillbaka efter sin avstickare på vita duken i somras. Bra som vanligt.

Den stora cliffhangern i Weeds som fått oss att hålla kvar röken i lungorna sedan tidigt i våras är passerad med åtta avsnitt. Håller fortfarande mycket bra! Om vi söker oss från den sköra förortsidyllen i Agrestic bort till Wisteria Lane så skvallras det på garageuppfarterna om att den fjärde säsongen av Desperate Housewives drar igång den 7:e oktober. Ännu ett kärt återseende att se fram emot.

The IT Crowd brände av sina sex avsnitt på lika många veckor, med sista avsnittet denna vecka. Denna säsong var precis lika bra som den första. Tyvärr precis lika kort som den första.

While installing and configuring Windows XP on my girlfriends recently purchased laptop and adding my favourite set of tools and must-haves I stumbled across one of Microsofts power toys called “Task Switcher” (When looking for TweakUI). I’ll talk more about it later on.

I guess everybody has their own favourite set of tools, so as an act of humanity I’ll list some gems from my What Every Windows Machine Should Have To Be Usable-list.

First of all we need a decent editor. This is a very basic function, but ever so important. If you’re stuck without pen and paper and need to scribble down a phone number I guess Notepad will do, but for any operation more advanced than that I suggest you have a look at Notepad++.
It has a ton of features, most of them very good too. It’s free and open source and has a fairly small foot print. I’ve tried a lot of different text editors in my quest for the ultimate one, and for the time being I beleive I’ve found it (at least for the Windows platform).

There’s a lot of picture viewers out there, all of them bragging about the number of formats they can handle, the number of transient effects included for the slideshow mode, all included photoshop-like filters for manipulating pictures and so on. Some of them started as fairly decent applications but got bloated somewhere up the must-include-more-functions-for-next-versions road (this, I think, is applicable for most applications though). Years ago I laid my eyes upon a small, fast and free picture viewer called IrfanView. It’s a great application with a lot of features, but still very small and very fast.

When laying my hands on a fresh installation of Windows XP the first things I do is:

• Change to classic theme and switch color theme (Rainy day FTW!)
• Switch of all unnecessary effects (all of them, that is)
• Modify the Task bar and Start menu to classic look and change some options.
• Modify most of the default settings for folder view.

This doesn’t get me very far in my strive for perfection, so what I do next is usually to download TweakUI from the Microsoft PowerToys site. Here I can get rid of annoyances like the little arrow and “Shortcut to…” on shortcuts, the delays for sub-menus, autoplay, and much more. Now don’t tell me that “menu selection fading” and “list box animation” makes you more productive.
Looking for TweakUI is what made my find TaskSwitcher (found on the same page). I grabbed it for my own Windows box as soon as I could (and I’ll install it and show it off to all of my colleagues tomorrow). It’s a small application that replaces the Alt-Tab behaviour.
Instead of a just a row of icons and a line of text to describe each item it’ll provide you with a screenshot. The performance impact seems to be close to nada. This is what I’ve always wanted, and I didn’t even know about it!

Geek Love - a novel by Katherine Dunn (ISBN: 0-375-71334-4)

The story of Geek love revolves around the narrator, Olympia Binewski - a bald headed, humpback albino midget in her forties. As we get to know her and learn about what she’s trying to accomplish we’re fed with flashbacks from when she grew up as the second-youngest child in a traveling carny family. The anomalies of Olympia and her siblings (Arturo - the Aqua boy, Iphigenia and Electra - the siamese twins and the young Chick with his special gifts) were the results of their parents ingenious way to create new attractions and shows for the carnival using chemicals and radioisotopes.

In many ways this is a book about the blessing and comforting feeling of being unique in a hostile world where the family ties is the only thing to hold on to.
Author Katherine Dunn (among others) is often mentioned by Chuck Palahniuk fans when giving recomendations on how to survive when you’ve read all his books and still need more. Chuck and Katherine both live in Portland, Oregon and her work - not the language as much as the passion for a fascinating and totaly bizzare yet graspable story - seems to have inspired him a lot in his strive towards great authorship.

If books were food this book would taste almost like something Chuck Palahniuk had cooked. Perhaps a little less salty but still one of the best meals you’ve had in a very long time.

It happens all the time - a seed starts to grow in the fertile soil contained inside my skull. Unfortunately they usually wither before they burst out into beautiful blossom. My intention is to let this blog serve as an irrigation system for those seeds.
Mediocre thoughts and ideas combined with the right tools and technology is usually a great success. This has been proven more than once.
Also: I’ll rant about the books, music, ideas, et.c. that I feel I just have to share with the rest of the world.
